Science

Science makes a positive impact on people’s lives. In many cases, Science saves lives. Scientists use their expertise to develop real solutions for real problems. Researchers may devote their whole lives to the pursuit of Science, developing remedies for many of the challenges that face our world.

Studying Science broadens our understanding of the world around us. It allows us to develop a range of ways of thinking: analysis of observations, spotting trends and patterns, mathematics and computation, laboratory work. Our curriculum pathways in Science provide an opportunity to develop scientific skills before our students decide on their next steps and explore more deeply particular interests and talents.

The career opportunities available at the end of UTC studies are wide and varied. They include medicine, pharmacy, life sciences, nursing, pathology, laboratory technician, veterinary science…to name just a few. The opportunities really are endless. Engineering & Computer Science

Engineering is concerned with the design, building, maintenance and use of machines, devices and structures. The discipline of Engineering is extremely broad and encompasses a range of specialised fields of engineering.

New technologies are playing an ever significant and influential role in our world. They are, for example, helping to address climate change, reduce our energy-based carbon footprint, improve the efficiency of cars and aeroplanes, develop new sources of energy, reduce the energy cost of daily life: the list is endless and as broad as the imagination of our graduates.

All of these technologies need people to develop them, apply them and maintain them – and all these people are engineers. This demand for Engineers and Computer Scientists means that jobs are plentiful and salaries are impressive. A Level Pathway

Students can select from the range of specialist A Level options.
Option blocks will be set in Spring 2017.
Students applying after this point will be asked to select from the option blocks available.

Entry requirements:

Please note that the new, numerical grading comes into effect this Summer. We are following current advice which is that a 'strong grade C' is a numerical grade '5'. We would expect a minimum of 5, preferably a 6, in Mathematics, for students considering Engineering and Science at KS5.

Minimum of 6 GCSE grades A*-B including Mathematics, English and Additional / Triple Science to study 3 A Levels.
Minimum of 8 GCSE grades A*-B including Mathematics, English and Additional / Triple Science to study 4 A Levels.

Minimum entry requirement for A Level courses is a B in the chosen subject at GCSE.
A Level Physics requires a minimum grade B at GCSE Physics or BB at GCSE Additional Science and a minimum grade B in GCSE Mathematics.
A Level Biology and Chemistry require a minimum grade B at GCSE Chemistry / Biology or BB at GCSE Additional Science.
A level Computer Scientists require a minimum B grade in Mathematics and, if studied, a B grade in Computer Science.
A Level Electronics require a minimum grade B in Mathematics and Physics.

Games Computing Pathway

Do you dream of being able to programme, produce, market and sell your own computer games? Does the thought of having the knowledge and skills to be able to make your own video game from scratch excite you? If you are interested in coding, games development, special effects, visual effects and creativity, then this course is idea for you. This two-year, 3 A-Level equivalent course will set you up for university studies or launch your career in the gaming industry.
A Level Computer Science (1 A Level)
AQA Entertainment Technology: Video Games Art & Design Level 3 (2 A Level equivalent)
Work Experience:

Students are required to undertake work experience for a minimum of two weeks per academic year during term time. Students are encouraged to use their holiday time to complete extensive work experience placements.
Entry Requirements:

GCSE Computer Science - Grade B or above (if studied)
GCSE Mathematics - Grade B or above
GCSE English - Grade C or above
A total of at least 6 GCSEs - Grade C or above
Passion for the subject and commitment to achieving the highest results
Commitment to work placements and collaborating with industry professionals

A portfolio of art or game work would be beneficial for any applicant to bring along on the interview day, but this is not mandatory.
